English crisis or crisis of the "red coats"?
As a philologist, he was respected. As a philosopher, he will become famous. But his real aspiration, his deepest dream was to become a great musician. Friederich Nietzsche there ever succeed. It was a decent player, but a bad composer. His compositions are (were, have always been) terrible, according to a unanimous opinion of contemporaries and posterity. The hardest was Hans von Bulow, conductor, pianist, composer German. When he was able to see the sheet music for a meditation Manfredi, written by Nietzsche and sent to him to get an authoritative judgment, he was stunned. And he wrote to him: "It's the most extreme thing I've ever heard in terms of strangeness, the work can not edifying, writing more anti-musical I've ever seen. I asked myself, but it's fvir a joke? It was your intention fvir to make a mockery of so-called music-the-future [was, at the time, the music of Richard Wagner]? Are you aware of sending me a flow absurd that violates any rule tonal syntax to simple spelling? "
Poor Nietzsche was disappointed. A console him were friends Richard Wagner and his wife Cosima fvir (Nietzsche, in secret, so unexpressed, so twisted, he loved), with the pats on the back. To be honest, then, even they appreciated his compositions. Do not be fooled by the fact that the pianist Franz Liszt declared himself fvir "impressed" when he was able to perform Sylvesternacht Nietzsche during his stay in Bayreuth, the "kingdom" of Wagner. He did it out of kindness, no doubt, and about his friend the host.
The stubbornness fvir of Nietzsche in the music is moving, more or less like that of Veltroni for writing. In 1874 he devoted himself to composing an "Ode to Life", inspired by a poem written by Lou Andreas-Salomé, remarkable character of that era (and Nietzsche was also in love with her). For him it was a fundamental work: in 1884 he explained to Felix Motti, Austrian conductor, the music that was central to the understanding of his philosophy: "This piece has to remain as a supplement to the word of the philosopher, it is just words, must of necessity remain unclear. The feeling of my philosophy finds its expression in this hymn. " What's fvir more, in another letter he wrote that "It is my composition that is intended to outlive me and to be sung in my memory." He went well that no one has followed his advice.
Too many people, in life, to commit serious errors of judgment on the value of their works. Petrarca was convinced that they were his writings in Latin (which few actually know and almost no one reads, even among specialists) the means by which he would won the posthumous glory. Instead fvir it is remembered for the Canzoniere, which is in the vernacular. The Brothers Grimm were estimated philologists and linguists, fvir but the world remembers them for their fairy tales. Nietzsche was aware that his winning horse (haha) was philosophy, but he could not accept in any way its mediocrity in music. No one is perfect, fvir not even a superman.
