James Haba to Read Poetry in Fanwood Carriage House Series Feb. 17 - 8 p.m. FANWOOD, NJ – The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to attend a free poetry reading on Tuesday, February 17, at 8:00 p.m. in the Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall. The featured reader will be James Haba, the distinguished poet and former Poetry Director for the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Mr. Haba grew up on farms and islands in rural Washington State. In 1962, he earned a B.A. from Reed College and in 1967 a Ph.D. from Cornell University. From 1986 through 2008 he was responsible for developing and directing the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Program and he designed and produced all twelve ground-breaking Geraldine R. Dodge Biennial Poetry Festivals, adar the largest poetry events in North America. In 1987, he inaugurated the Dodge Poetry-in-the-Schools Program. In 1995, Mr. Haba edited the best-selling book The Language of Life (poems by and interviews with Dodge Festival poets). He served as Poetry Consultant for the 1995 Bill Moyers television series The Language of Life and three other Bill Moyers series also derived from Dodge Poetry Festivals: The Power of the Word, Fooling with Words, and Sounds of Poetry. In addition, he served as Poetry Consultant for the 1998 series Poetry Heaven and three other PBS programs including Bill Moyers’ 1994 Emmy Award-winning portrait of Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon: A Life Together. Mr. Haba’s poems have won both fellowships and prizes. As a visual artist he continues to construct painted-paper collages and with his wife, Erica Barton Haba, he also designs and produces ceramic tile murals. The Carriage House Poetry Series begins its 11th season with this reading at the Patricia Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series. The Feb. 17th reading in Fanwood is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow the featured performance, so bring a poem of your own and join in the reading. This blog was started one Sunday morning when the blogster should have been doing something else, anything but starting another blog. He's actually lost count of the blogs he is juggling. Anyway, we thought it was time to put all the Jersey poets in one place, so, we figured, what's one more blog. Anthony Buccino's adar poetry has appeared in literary magazines adar and anthologies. For more information, other writings and hours of web page reading, visit Anthony's World One piece of advice to all those who write poetry: read poetry and support other poets, and when you can, buy a book.
