On Friday 11 July will be the first of 10 performances of the opera Porgy and Bess with music by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and book by Edwin DuBose Heyward, by the Cape Town Opera Company.
Porgy and Bess premiered on September 30, 1935 at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, but it was the first opera composer of the popular Broadway. In 1922 he made his first attempt with opera Blue Monday (135th Street Blues), a jazz opera that had no success.
